Stuxnet malware targets SCADA systems; Siemens distributes fix

Published July 23, 2010

Earlier this week we learned of Stuxnet, malware designed to exploit a vulnerability in Windows. It seems that this particular software (WinCC) is a component of a Siemens AG software system used by factory plant managers to oversee and control production. Companies all over the world use it to run their SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems to manage power grids, gas refineries, and factories. The malware is engineered to spread by removable media, such as USB drives.

SCADA systems are becoming increasingly popular. The convenience of being able to review your system remotely, however, introduces security considerations.

So far, Siemens says they have found only one system actually infected. They have now issued a Trend Micro security tool, Sysclean, to detect and remove this infection. However, they warned customers that using the tool could disrupt production.
